Beijing New Airport Metal Roof: Control-Layer and Submittal Reference

ASSEMBLY LOGIC

Define the control function before choosing the roll material

An airport terminal roof combines long drainage paths, extensive joints, service penetrations and changing indoor moisture loads. The correct membrane is selected by its position and function in the whole assembly, not by a product name alone.

Primary weather shedding

Metal panels, seams, flashings and drainage components manage direct rain and snow. A membrane beneath the panels is not an automatic substitute for this exterior system.

Secondary water management

If specified, the underlay should direct incidental water toward a safe outlet. Laps, penetrations, eaves and transitions must preserve the drainage plane.

Air-control continuity

Air leakage can transport much more moisture than vapor diffusion. Identify one continuous air-control line and detail every joint, curb and service opening.

Vapor control

Vapor resistance and layer position depend on climate, indoor humidity, insulation arrangement and drying direction. Do not select by permeability value in isolation.

Thermal continuity

Insulation joints, compressed zones and metal thermal bridges influence surface temperature and condensation risk. Membranes cannot correct a discontinuous thermal layer.

Construction durability

The proposed roll must tolerate the specified installation method, substrate contact, foot traffic, wind exposure and covering schedule without unapproved damage.

TECHNICAL SUBMITTAL

Compare evidence under the same test basis

A useful submittal connects each required function to a declared value, test method, sample identity and acceptance criterion. Marketing terms such as “breathable,” “waterproof” or “high strength” are not comparable data by themselves.

INTERFACE REVIEW

Most roof risk concentrates at transitions

Large uninterrupted areas are easier to control than the places where layers stop, turn or meet another trade. Draw these interfaces before ordering rolls and accessories.

Panel seams, laps and fasteners

Confirm water flow direction, lap sequence, permitted fastener zones and how penetrations through the membrane are sealed or drained.

Ridges, eaves and gutters

Maintain the intended air, vapor and water-control lines while allowing ventilation or drainage openings required by the roof design.

Skylights, smoke vents and equipment curbs

Coordinate upstands, corner pieces, tapes, sealants and termination bars. Avoid relying on a field-cut sheet to solve a three-dimensional transition without a detail.

Parapets and wall-to-roof junctions

Show which wall layer connects to which roof layer. Assign responsibility where facade, roofing and interior trades meet.

Expansion and movement joints

Allow the specified movement without pulling the membrane, opening a seam or transferring stress to an incompatible accessory.

Drains, valleys and low points

Keep drainage paths unobstructed and prevent secondary water from terminating inside insulation or at an unsealed edge.

QUALITY HOLD POINTS

Inspect the layer before it disappears

Photographs are useful only when linked to location, batch and acceptance status. Agree the inspection record before the membrane is covered by the next roof layer.

Approved submittal

Freeze the data sheet, test basis, sample code, color or print, roll dimensions, accessories and installation instructions.

Incoming material

Check roll labels, batch identity, packaging condition, quantity and any transport damage before moving material to the roof.

Installed continuity

Record substrate condition, seam direction, overlap, penetrations, terminations, repairs and temporary exposure before covering.

Close-out package

Collect approved deviations, inspection photographs, batch records, delivery documents and product documents required by the contract.

FAQ

Airport terminal metal roof questions

These answers define selection boundaries. The approved project specification, local requirements and complete roof assembly remain controlling.

Can a waterproof breathable membrane replace the primary metal roof covering or waterproofing system?

No. A breathable membrane is one control layer within a designed roof assembly. Its function, exposure limits, lap treatment and drainage path must be defined by the project documents. It does not replace metal panels, flashings, gutters, roof penetrations or a primary waterproofing layer where those components are required.

How should vapor permeability be selected for a large terminal roof?

Start with the complete assembly, climate, indoor temperature and humidity, insulation position and intended drying direction. Compare declared values only when the test method and conditions are the same. A higher vapor value is not automatically safer if another layer blocks drying or if uncontrolled air leakage carries moisture into cold zones.

Is an interior vapor control layer always required?

Not as a universal rule. Its need, resistance and position depend on climate, occupancy moisture, operating schedule, roof build-up and local code. The designer should use project-specific condensation or hygrothermal analysis and then maintain continuity at joints, supports and service penetrations.

Does a membrane test report prove that the complete roof meets fire requirements?

No. A roll-material result and an assembly classification are different evidence. Metal deck, insulation, membranes, adhesives, fasteners, cavities and interior finishes can affect the required roof or wall classification. Confirm the applicable assembly, test method and accepted documentation with the project authority.

What information should be included in an airport-roof material inquiry?

Provide the layer position, roof build-up, target test methods or declared values, roll width and length, estimated quantity, exposure period, seam and accessory concept, printing or private-label requirement, pallet limits, destination and required submittal documents. This allows the sample, quotation and packing plan to be reviewed on the same basis.
