ROOF ZONING

One large roof may contain several moisture and exposure conditions

Exhibition roofs are rarely uniform. Public halls, loading areas, service rooms, entrance canopies, plant zones and internal gutters can impose different temperatures, humidity loads, slopes and construction sequences. Divide the roof into reviewable zones before fixing one membrane specification.

Public exhibition halls

High occupancy during events can change indoor moisture loads quickly. Review air leakage, vapor-control continuity and cold-surface risk for peak operating conditions rather than relying only on annual averages.

Loading and logistics zones

Large doors, vehicle access and frequent pressure changes can disturb the intended air-control plane. Define robust terminations and avoid leaving roll edges exposed to repeated air movement.

Service and plant areas

Ducts, supports, curbs and maintenance routes increase penetrations and local traffic. Coordinate preformed details, protection and repair procedures before equipment installation.

Canopies and perimeter roofs

Edge zones experience different wind, drainage and exposure conditions from central roof areas. Confirm lap orientation, securement concept and permitted temporary exposure for each zone.

Internal gutters and low points

Secondary water must not terminate inside insulation or at a closed edge. Show drainage continuity, overflow routes and how membrane transitions meet gutters, sumps and outlets.

Movement and expansion zones

Long roof runs and structural joints can create differential movement. The control layers and accessories must accommodate the specified displacement without opening laps or transferring stress.

COORDINATION DETAILS

Freeze the transitions before roll width and accessories are ordered

A wide roll may improve field efficiency, but it does not solve undefined edges or trade boundaries. The procurement schedule should follow approved interface details so the roll, tapes, labels and pallet allocation match the installation sequence.

Roof-to-wall junctions

Identify which facade layer connects to which roof layer, the required overlap direction and who is responsible where roofing and cladding contractors meet.

Smoke vents and skylights

Coordinate upstands, corners, saddles, curb transitions and termination height. Avoid improvising a three-dimensional transition from a flat sheet after the opening is installed.

Internal gutters and drains

Keep the secondary drainage path continuous to a safe outlet. Show how underlay edges, gutter linings, sumps and overflows interact without trapping water.

Expansion joints

Define movement range, support conditions, flexible transition components and inspection access. Do not bridge a designed joint with a tightly restrained membrane.

Equipment supports and walkways

Set permitted penetration zones, protection layers and repair responsibilities before mechanical trades create repeated local damage.

Perimeters and temporary terminations

Specify securement, weather protection and restart details where installation stops between roof zones or remains uncovered between delivery phases.

Phased construction works best when every roll, inspection and photograph can be tied to a roof zone. Agree the hold points and naming convention before materials arrive.

Zone release package

Incoming batch check

FAQ

Exhibition-center metal roof questions

The answers clarify procurement boundaries. Final decisions remain subject to the approved roof assembly, climate, occupancy conditions, local requirements and project authority.

Can one membrane specification be used across the entire exhibition-center roof?

Only after the zones have been checked. Interior humidity, slope, wind exposure, temporary covering schedule, drainage geometry and penetration density may differ. One product may be suitable for several zones, but that should be an engineering conclusion supported by the same acceptance criteria, not a default assumption.

Does a wider roll always reduce installation cost?

A wider roll can reduce field laps on open areas, but handling weight, wind, roof access, crew size, curved geometry and interface density also matter. Select width together with roll length, pallet allocation and installation sequence; otherwise the nominal efficiency can be lost through difficult handling or excessive offcuts.

How should temporary exposure be controlled during phased construction?

Use the manufacturer-approved exposure limit as one input, then plan realistic delivery, installation and covering dates by roof zone. Keep rolls protected before use, secure temporary edges, prevent standing water, inspect after severe weather and document any damage or contamination before the layer is covered.

What is required to compare two breathable membrane quotations?

Compare the same construction, intended layer position, test methods, conditions, units, roll dimensions, accessories, packing, documentation and acceptance sample. A quotation with a higher isolated vapor or strength number is not necessarily equivalent if the method, specimen or system details differ.

What should pallet labels show for a phased exhibition-roof delivery?

At minimum, use the agreed product code, roll dimensions, quantity, batch or lot reference and project delivery reference. For zone-based distribution, add the approved zone or sequence identifier without replacing traceable batch information. Confirm barcode, language, private-label artwork and weather protection before mass packing.
